 2018 Preview

Houston County completed the 2017 season with a 8-3 record. With their 5-2 region record and a third place finish in Class 1A region two, the Lions earned a spot in the playoffs in 2017. Houston County's season came to an end in the first round of the playoffs when they fell to Talladega County Central by a score of 39-7.

The Lions won as many games as in any season since 2009. The Lions last playoff victory came during the 2004 season. They would love to break through this year with a post season win.

Since 2010, the Houston County football program has struggled with a record of 20-62.

Over the past 25 seasons, Houston County has managed to compile a record of 117-140. Their 46.0% winning percentage ranks 36th in Class 2A and 234th in the AHSAA.

The Lions are led by head coach Michael Atkins who is entering his fourth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 14-18 over the past three seasons at Houston County. Under his direction the Lions have qualified for the playoffs a total of two times. They have not won a region crown with Coach Atkins.

Coach Atkins' overall record as a head football coach in three season stands at 14-18 (43.8%).

The Houston County Lions will play in Class 2A region two during the 2018 season. The Lions move up in classification to Class 2A. They may find the going slightly tougher with the move.

The Lions will be in the mix for one of the last two playoff spots in region two this season.

The Lions open the 2018 season at home against non-region opponent Providence Christian on Friday, August 24 at L.F. Tillery Field. Last year the Providence Christian Eagles finished with an overall record of 6-5 and in fourth place in Class 3A region two. The Eagles lost in the first round of the Class 3A playoffs to Gordo by a score of 34-7.

Houston County and Providence Christian have met a total of 8 times on the football field. The Lions have a 0-8-0 record against the Eagles. They last met in 2015 with Providence Christian winning by a score of 56-0.

Great Moments in Alabama High School Football History

The Tuscaloosa Black Bears were considered one of the best programs in the nation from 1925-1931. Their record over that span was an amazing 61-0-3.
